“She doesn’t know
that she wasn’t my
first love. It never
came up. That was
someone else,
a girl I dated
in high school,”
he remembers, though
he says she doesn’t
cross his mind anymore.
He reaches for
the Marlboros he quit smoking
in the hospital, pats
an empty pocket and sighs.
“We were young and dumb.”
     ”That’s any relationship,”
     I tell him. “Eventually,
     you just stop being young.”
